12/8/2010 update+ relationship between TDS and shrimp productivity

Tank update

I’ve been way too busy recently so I haven’t been able to update. Here’s a quick update!

I realized older shrimp seem to always die during winter every year and population always seems to stay the same during the winter. Where as in the summer, it grows like crazy. I tested the TDS and realized the tap’s total dissolved solids (TDS) was 120 compared to a TDS of just 20 in the summer. With the addition of GH booster, fertilizers, and evaporation, the average TDS in all the tanks were about 250-300. I started using less GH booster, mixing tap water with distilled water, and stopped dosing sulfate based fertilizers. In addition, I added an air pump that would turn on at night (when co2 is off) to increase dissolved O2 levels (DO). This all seemed to have help prevent the population of my colonies from decreasing but they still haven’t grown. I’m not worrying too much though because population growth always seems to pick back up in late January to February.

In the next few weeks I’m planning on adding a new light to the row of 12 gallon tanks and planting them densely with lots of flora since the populations haven’t been booming either. I’m hoping better plant growth would trigger a growth in population of the inverts. After fixing all the tanks up with a new light and lots of plants, I’ll post up more pictures.

wine red shrimp

I found several CRS with a darker almost black sort of red in my colony about a month or 2 ago! People in Asia calls this variation Wine Red CRS and people have been selling better quality (more red) of the same shrimp for around $500 each online.
About 2 weeks after I found my first batch of Wine Red CRS I found another 10 <1 week old babies with the same intense red colors but as they grew they started losing the intensity of the red. The dark red coloration is still noticeably darker but its probably not dark enough to be considered wine red anymore.
Unlike most breeders I was selectively breeding for not only solid white but also solid, and dark red but I never expected something like this! As of right now I have about 5 shrimp that could be considered wine red and around 10 that is between “regular” red and Wine Red.
